Pew Report: Voters Want All New Ideas – Just Another Old Idea? Michael Bresciani, October 8, 2015

nothing-new-under-the-sun.jpgAccording to a new Pew report republicans now favor new ideas over experience and a proven record.

The shift may well be just another way of saying we want Trump even if he doesn’t have a shred of experience. Republicans seem to be suffering from acute loss of memory. New ideas were how voters put Barack Obama into office in 2008. Obama’s accomplishments and his record prior to 08 were dismal to non-existent. ‘Change we can believe in’ was an empty campaign slogan with no clear definition.

Today we are sure, what Obama meant by the slogan, but we have not been sure about anything else since 2008.

The Pew report says, “Since March, the share of all registered voters who say it is more important for a presidential candidate to have “new ideas and a different approach” has surged – with virtually all of the increase coming among Republican and Republican-leaning voters. Today, by more than two-to-one (65% to 29%), Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters say it is more important that a candidate have new ideas than “experience and a proven record.” Just five months ago, GOP voters valued experience and a proven record over new ideas, 57% to 36%.

After observing the journals and articles of both the left and the right for the last ten years it has become clear that the adage “Those who do not learn from the past – are doomed to repeat it,” is almost never quoted by liberals and is quoted by the right and republicans most often just after a defeat is handed to them by the liberals.

The sudden surge of interest in Trump, the new kid on the block, is proof that the right is just as vulnerable to trends and flashes in the pan as are the liberals.

Recently, Paula White, whose own past is a rage of controversy among Christians, declared that anyone who speaks against the Trump – will be condemned – yes, condemned was the word she used, guess I better run for cover.

White’s endorsement has not yet been scrutinized by the ever vigilant hawks of “separation of church and state’ but to this writer, White’s endorsement would be like asking Joel Osteen what the Bible says about hell in detail.

Paula White should know that God decides who will rule and the question looms – would White condemn God if he doesn’t choose Trump? White may also want to check God’s reason for “condemning” anyone – our choices for President - is not one of them.

For me it is a four word phrase that comes to mind when I think of Paula White’s prophetic declaration – pop religion hokey pokey.

Condemnation is only coming from the Trumpites. Others who are reticent to leave proven records and experience, and those who do remember the lessons of the past are not so willing to jump onboard the Trump train.

While I may be one of the only writers to make these observations, Trump should at least be glad I was not the editor of his high school yearbook. I would have been the one to attach “Most likely to start World War III” as the caption for Trumps yearbook picture.

I am no political science wizard and yet, I’m fairly certain starting the next world war is - not part of good foreign policy.

Hitler and other despots always come into view when comparing political figures, but this short list must be considered.

Almost all political upheaval, war and international intrigue has been created by those who just got sick and tired of the status quo and vied for “something new.” New can be good, but when that’s all that matters it is very often dangerous.

Hitler – a new “Third Reich”

Mussolini – the new “fascism”

Mao – the new “Peoples Republic”

Hippies – the new “morality”

Obama – the new “change”

I am satisfied that good leaders can pull something from the best of the old, along with some new ideas and with a proven record, some statesmanship and a few good people skills, can lead a nation with God’s help.

“Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.” (Mt 13: 52)

For me it would be irresponsible to leave this subject without giving fair warning. The coming last and worst dictator, the antichrist, will be seen as the essence of all that is new.

He will leave off old religions, old views of women and marriage, and the law. He will even think it is time to change the very way we perceive time and seasons.

He succeeds at all these new changes which serve to precipitate the re-entrance of Christ into our world in judgment. He has only seven years, about the time Barack Obama has already been in office to accomplish all these things. It does not end well.

“And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” (Da 7: 25)

This author joins the millions of bible readers around the world that believe that this man is alive in our world today and will soon be revealed.

He will be the epitome of the “new man” in our old world, but it turns out, he is the new patch sewn into our old garment – that tears it to shreds.

“No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.” (Mk 2: 21)

New has never been all that it is cracked up to be. That is exactly why the great King Solomon said:

“The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” (Ec 1: 9)

Finally, in today’s America, people are watching the new ‘change we can believe in’ disregarding Bible truths, ignoring the constitution and smashing our long held traditions like marriage between one man and one woman – how much more “new” can this nation handle.

We are like children filled with fuzzy thoughts as we make a wish upon a star or lay transfixed on the first beams of morning light to see what Santa has brought us in the night.

Honesty is set aside for the chance to grab the shiny ring as we pass by, but most Americans look back with reverence and deep nostalgia at our grandfather’s day – we look ahead with fear and trepidation at the aspect of our childrens day.

Even the Bible, so many of us trust, tells us to “occupy” (Lk 19: 13) and to “hold fast” (Rev 3: 3) until Christ returns.

We are told not to seek another Reich, but only that which is right, the millennial kingdom will bring everything new with it. In fact, the very business of ‘new’ is God’s - to wit:

“And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.” (Rev 21: 5)

As a final note, before we take Paula White too seriously consider this…

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” (Ro 8: 1)
