Happy Birthday America - 241 Years Old by David Herbertson, July 2, 2017
This article is what I think about the current conditions of America and why we see so much hatred and bitterness in the news each day. I have never witnessed in my 76 years such hatred of Christianity and attempts to destroy it by organizations like the ACLU and the SPLC. The outward and unashamed displays of immorality and the lawlessness that destroys property, murders police officers and shuts down free speech has never been this bad in America. The hatred for the president through the “Resistance” and the “Never Trump” people and the extreme bias of our news media cause one to be concerned about our future in America. We are a divided nation. Donald Trump and the last election have dominated the news for the past year. Every day we hear from most news media and Hollywood celebrities about this evil person sitting in the White House. Many of the allegations are not true but it must be admitted that Donald Trump displays many character flaws and trying to defend them or ignore them is pure folly. I understand that he was not elected to be our pastor but I cannot overlook and dismiss the ungodly message that he presents to a nation that is on life support morally. The question I have been asking myself is how did Donald Trump become President of the United States when his personality and character flaws are so apparent? We were only given two possible choices in this election. The two choices were Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Both individuals represent the lowest standards of good character that we have witnessed during our lifetimes in candidates for the highest office in the land. Definition of Character: the pattern of behavior or personality found in an individual or group; moral or ethical quality, self-discipline, temperament, fortitude, reputation. The odds of Donald Trump making it through the primary and then winning this election are beyond belief unless we realize what God is trying to show us. Romans 13:1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. God gave us these two deeply flawed candidates because they reflect what America has become as we turned away from the foundation of Christianity that our founding fathers believed at the beginning of this great nation. These Godly principles survived for nearly 200 years and even though many lived wicked sinful lives our family and government structures and our churches held us together. These institutions are failing today. We see anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, lawlessness, shameless immorality on display every day in America. That is the result of sin and godlessness. That is what God sees as He looks upon a country that He blessed and prospered like no other in the history of this world. I believe that He weeps as He watches us destroy ourselves. We seem to have no regard for His compassion and kindness and His desire to be our friend and savior. America is failing. God is not only a loving God but He is also a just God. He will not allow our sins of 60 million aborted children and the denigration of the family and schools through a radical homosexual agenda to continue without bringing judgment and punishment to our nation. In a recent conversation, I was told that there is nothing after death. No hell. No heaven. Life just ends. In a home that I recently visited I noticed a sign on the wall that said, “The Day of Non-Judgment is near” If you do not believe in God and His written word then I guess it makes sense to believe this atheistic approach. Just live your life however you please and then die. No problem. But God’s word shows me a much different picture. Hebrews 9:27 “Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him”. Psalm 14:1 “The fool says in his heart there is no God.” Proverbs 12:15 “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes.” The dictionary defines a fool as someone who lacks sense or judgment. I think that in many ways this describes both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Their words and actions have shown us that they fall very short in good character. But this is also true of most people in America today. When a nation and its leaders turn away from God they become more and more cruel and selfish. They tear each other down with lies and deceit. They refuse to accept God’s way of living which is shown throughout scripture. It allows those who have faith and trust in Jesus Christ to live peaceful lives in the midst of an unpeaceful world. God’s word tells us to “put others first”, “to have self-control”, “to guard your lips and your mouth”, “to love your neighbor”, “to love your enemy”, “to practice forgiveness”, “to help the poor”, “to care for your family members” and to find ways to encourage and build each other up rather than destroy them. These are not the traits that we witness in the news of the day but there is a remnant that still believes and prays that God will again pour out His grace and mercy on America and restore our land. For all of you that have such a hatred for our President, I suggest you go and look in a mirror and see what your character reflects. Is it filled with hatred and revenge and unforgiveness? Do you want to experience peace and purpose and joy in your life? God is patiently waiting for you to come to Him. He loves every human that He created on this earth and whether you recognize it or not He is pouring out His grace and mercy on both the saved and the unsaved. He wants us to recognize our sinful wicked nature and come to Him in sincere repentance.
If, and when, that begins to take place in America we will start to see change for the good. People praying for our President and our leaders will perhaps move the heart of God and bring blessings again instead of judgment. Our President can change his radical behaviors like any other man with a sinful heart. Those that show such hate and bitterness can change and help America to recapture our spirit of goodness that has been our hallmark for over two centuries. Our only hope is in spiritual revival for America. Only God can make this happen.
