Happy Easter America 2018 by David Herbertson, March 22, 2018

flash-cross.pngI did not anticipate that the new rope lights that I purchased for my front yard cross would not be a continual light.  Instead of a constant light I found that they go on and off for different amounts of time. They stayed on for 4 seconds, 8 seconds, or 16 seconds. After each lighting the cross would return to darkness and remain dark for a short time.

I got to thinking that these different lengths of times could represent our lives as Christians.  We are all running a race and are at different stages of growth. Some are brand new baby Christians, and some have been running this race for many decades. Regardless of where we are in this race we need to be faithful to God and His word and live in ways that please Him.

Eric Liddell in the movie Chariots of Fire had this to say about a race. “You came to see a race today.  To see someone, win.  But I want you to do more than just watch a race.  I want you to take part in it.  I want to compare faith to running in a race. It’s hard.  It requires concentration of will, energy of soul. You experience elation when the winner breaks the tape-especially if you’ve got a bet on it.

But how long does it last? You go home.  Maybe your dinner is burned.  Maybe you haven’t got a job. So, who am I to say, “believe, have faith,” in the face of life’s realities? I would like to give you something more permanent, but I can only point the way. I have no formula for winning the race.  Everyone runs in her own way, or his own way.  And where does the power come from to see the race to the end?  It comes from within. Jesus said, “Behold, the Kingdom of God is within you.  If with all your hearts, you truly seek me, you shall surely find me.” If you commit yourself to the love of Christ, then that is how you run a straight race.”

As I look at this cross changing from darkness to light I think about the world that we live in.  It is filled with darkness and yet sprinkled across the world are points of light representing Jesus Christ who died on a cross over 2000 years ago for the forgiveness of sins. We as Christians are lights in the middle of darkness running a race.

Mathew 24:14 “The Gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the Nations, and then the end will come.”

Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU) has been translating the Gospel into over 1400 different languages for the last 3 decades. They report that every 8 seconds somewhere in the world, another person indicates a decision to follow Christ after viewing this film. Each time the lights on my cross come on I think about someone, somewhere becoming part of God’s family.

Wycliffe Bible Translators has worked for more than 70 years to make the Bible available in all languages and dialects.  They have a Vision that sets the goal to have the Bible in every language (over 7000) by 2025. Technology has allowed them to accelerate this work and many Christians are working every day to make this happen. What an amazing time for us to be alive and part of the fulfillment of prophesy.

The Voice of the Martyrs has for more than 50 years supported and helped more than 40,000 individuals to take Bibles and the message of hope into dangerous and hostile parts of the world. They risk their lives and face severe persecution every day and hour as they follow the mandate of Christ to take the Gospel into all the world. Many have lost their lives and homes or sit in prisons in these dangerous places in our world as they continue to boldly proclaim Christ.

Missionaries and other Christian organizations are faithfully giving time and resources to show love and compassion to this dark world.  Lights are shining in the darkness as our God works His final plans for this world. Thousands of Muslims are coming to Christ and requesting Bibles in the Middle East as we see the time of Christ’s return getting closer.

Campus Crusade for Christ say’s “Do whatever it takes to bring the Gospel to everyone everywhere.”

That means you and me. That means in our homes and neighborhood and work places.  This Easter season make it your goal to be part of this mission to share Christ to a hurting world.

Happy Easter.
